Angela Penbrook? Angel Stevens? A Scam by Any Other Name…

Hey, you! “Angela Penbrook!” We’re calling you out. You are deliberately misleading people desperate for legitimate work so you can sell your “rebate processing program.” We’re gonna expose you.

When we said we were going to review the “rebate processing jobs” that have become popular over the last year, one of the first commenters asked if we were going to look at Angela Penbrook’s system at myrebateprocessor.com or processfromhome.com. Or is it “Angel Stevens?” It doesn’t really matter because both “women” and their claims are equally misleading.

[Update March 10, 2009: ABC News’s 20/20 program featured this scam on March 6. Click here to watch the segment.]

We didn’t sign up for her program because it was $197, while other sites are offering the exact same “opportunity” for as little as $29.95. And because we didn’t sign up, this is not a full review. It’s merely my opinion based on experience and based on the claims on “Angela’s” own website.

Read All About “Rebate Processing Jobs”
If you’re new to I’ve Tried That, you’ll want to click over to our full review of rebate processor jobs. We signed up for one of them and tell you all about what they’re really offering.

After you’ve read that original review, this one will make a lot more sense. It’s the same pig, just with different lipstick.

It’s Not a Job. They’re Barely Rebates
What Penbrook is offering you is not a job. You’re not going to get batches of work from Home Depot of Blockbuster or Netflix. It is internet marketing. And to call what you would be doing “rebate processing” is deliberately misleading. Here’s how the program is supposed to work:

  • The forms you fill out are used to create Internet advertisements for companies selling products through Clickbank, a large Internet marketing clearing house.
  • After you create an ad, you have to get lots of people to see it. You do this by spreading your ads all over the ‘Net. (Psst! That’s called “spam” and is frowned upon in polite societies.)
  • When lots of people see it, some will click on it.
  • When lots of people click on it, some will purchase whatever your ad is selling.
  • Then, and only then, will you get paid.
  • The “rebate” is you sending part of your commission back to the buyer.
  • Lots of Hype, Little Substance
Here’s a clue you can use to spot misleading “job” advertisements every time: look for the sales tactics. Why are sales tactics a clue that you’re about to be taken to the cleaners? Because the scammer led you to believe that you’re learning about a job. But if you read the whole page, do you have a good idea of what you will be doing?

Imagine going to a job interview and your potential boss tells you a sob story about how broke he was, how he finally “made it” and how you can make thousands of dollars a day. Wouldn’t you be suspicious he didn’t tell you what work you would be doing? The same principle applies to Internet “job” advertisements.

Here are the sales tactics Angela Penbrook uses at myrebateprocessor.com. See the looooong page that starts out with emotional hype? See the clock ticking down until your chance to buy expires? Those are designed to sell you something, not to get you to do legitimate work. Do you really think the positions are almost full and that “today might be the last day?” It’s a sales tactic. See the testimonials? See the pictures of riches and happy people? All are designed to push your emotional buttons to get you to click and buy.

The Full Truth About Some of Her Lies
$15 per rebate? If you make a sale from your Internet ads AND the commission is more than $15 AND you decide to send all but $15 back to the purchaser as a “rebate,” then yes, you made $15. I don’t know about you, but that’s a lot of “if.”

Three easy steps? Yes, you can sign up at Clickbank, create ads, and see who has made purchases that are eligible for refunds. I guess those are three steps. But they are NOT easy steps. They’re categories of steps, each one requiring countless hours and clicks. You’ll spend many hours just to get started, let alone the complex steps involved in getting people to see and click on your ads.

The reasons processing rebates is profitable. These reasons are about halfway down her page, after the table showing how much money you can make. They are deliberately written to make you think companies are dieing to “hire” you to work from home processing their rebates. I hope it’s clear by now that nothing could be further from the truth.

If You Don’t Believe Me, How About the Better Business Bureau?
The BBB report has this to say about myrebateprocessor.com:

Complainants allege false advertising, misrepresentation, inability to obtain refunds, and failure to honor their money back guarantee. Some customers complain that instead of receiving an employment opportunity, they received only instructions on internet sales tactics. Other complainants report they are unable to speak with anyone at the company or that company personnel is rude or fails to resolve their concerns. Most complainants allege the company fails to provide any information or instructions on obtaining refunds. All complaints are pending at this time.

    And this:

We believe this company’s advertising is deceptive and misleading. They are not directly offering employment. They sell information, not viable work opportunities. In our experience, the only one collecting any money will be this company collecting your $197.00. We know of no work at home offer that has ever generated the amount of income implied or advertised in the offer.

    Scrubbing the Ick Off
I could go on, but I’ve spent enough time with Angela Penbrook. I need to go take a shower now. I’m so thoroughly disgusted with her deception, I can’t even tell you. Here at I’ve Tried That, we hear from lots of people who are just trying to make a little extra working from home, and they get taken in by lying pages like this one. They usually spend money they don’t have to sign up for programs they don’t understand. Angela Penbrook knows this and plays your fears to make herself rich.

We’ve written a book that tells you how to find real jobs online and how to spot deceptive advertising like rebate processing sites use.

    [Update: April 5, 2008]
This is very revealing. Connie in the comments called “Angela’s” 1-800 number to demand a refund. The rep on the other end of the line took her name and information, put her on hold, and then came back and said her refund was being processed. But Connie never signed up to begin with! “Angela Penbrook’s” operation is probably being run from a kitchen table somewhere with a pencil and paper.

  1. I wish I’d read this follow up before giving this Anglela Penbrook my $197.00!! I have spoken with the same rude bunch as you all and still no refund. I checked the BBB(Better Business Bureau) i was rudely told that by a Micheal Jefferson 06/05/08 so I did!! And found an address which is 19800 McArthur Blvd. Suite 300, Irvine, CA 92612 phone # 1 800 324 9708. I was also told that my refund was being processed first 3to5 business days, than 5to7 business days than 7to10 business days than 10to15 business days!! Still no credit back to my credit card. Next I received an emal from a Joseph Ashford, Senior Care Manager(email: ashford.joseph@yahoo.com)saying that I will receive a full refund check in 2 weeks. I have yet to receive a refund so I’ve took legal steps 1] reported them to my bank as fraud 2] wrote a letter to the Federal Trade Commisson 3] A letter to the Attorney General. I’m determine to get my $197.00 back!! THIS IS THE WORSE SCAM EVER!! I am disabled for real and was attempting to uase my Work Ticket from Soc. Secrty. to establish a real Homebased Business I’m an honest person I was really looking for a way to work from home.

  2. Be so careful when requesting a refund. Make sure and get a confirmation # that starts with 2 alpha digits followed by 8 numeric digits. These folks will string you along for weeks if you let them. Keep on ’em.
Don’t let the 90 days get too close, cause then they’ve gotcha!

  4. Hello, Cath here again. Sorry, I forgot to mention that I emailed them simply by replying to their Week 3 training package email. I didn’t try to phone them as you can imagine how expensive international phone calls are! They definitely read their emails – I’m proof of that. I didn’t want to send a nasty email like I did but realised I only had one shot to get their attention (and my money back) – and I certainly did! I really hope this helps someone, Cath

  5. Hi Everyone,

Cath here again and… success!! I got my refund today from Angel Stevens Process At Home. It only took 5 days to get it! This is the email I wrote which got me my refund. I’m so sorry it is a bit long-winded but hopefully it will give you some ideas to get your own money back. I think the trick is aggression and threats unfortunately!! Good luck everyone, Cath :)

    Dear Angel

I am very disappointed with your Process At Home system. I have made $0 in the last few weeks and as such would like to request my money back as per your 100% Money Back Guarantee. I believe that this is not a legitimate work at home opportunity as you state repeatedly on your website. Nowhere on your website does it mention that you have to actually sell things before you can process the rebate on your own sale! It states clearly that there is no selling involved which is plain untrue.

Having Googled your company I have found many people are not getting their money back and the only way they are is by going directly to their banks. I am disappointed that this is a scam and I hope you do the right thing by giving my money back. I used my rent money to pay you thinking that I would be making money immediately (also stated in your website) and found that the only way to make money would be if someone as gullible as me bought the product I was flogging. I don’t want to scam people and take advantage of them and I want a refund IMMEDIATELY. If you really have been in a bad finacial position like you say you have then you’ll understand what it is like to be behind in the rent and have to make humiliating excuses every week.

I have been to my bank and shown them your website and emails and they are not happy. Fraud is an extremely serious offence here in Australia and as such my bank will reverse the charges on my credit card and notify the Federal Police. First they want me to contact you (which I am doing now) to see if you will honour your money back guarantee. If I have not received a refund in 1 week they will refund my money and give your details to the Federal Police Fraud Squad. Please honour your promise and refund my money IMMEDIATELY. Thankyou, Cath

  6. ANGEL STEVENS IS A SCAM!!!

I signed up for this scam two months ago. After signing up they were supposed to send me a training module. Well they didnt so I had to e-mail them. No response.

Then i e-mailed them seven times in a row and i finally got a response the next day with the training module. Then it explained how i had to place ad’s on search engines for companies, then once I got people to buy the product I would “process their refund”.

I sent them an e-mail stating how angry I was and they said and I quote, “After you finished with the training, you will be provided with a list of companies to process rebates for that will pay between $15-$50 per rebate.”

Anyone who wants this e-mail I will be happy to forward it to you. Any lawyers out there, please CALL ME 847 767 8462. LookN2MyBluStars at AOL PLEASE E-MAIL ME I WILL BE HAPPY TO SPEAK WITH YOU.

Well it is now two months later and I have yet to receive the LIST OF COMPANIES. I called customer service 5 times today. One person was able to pull up my account and another one was not. Of the two people who were able to pull up my account said they would send me that information and I have YET TO RECEIVE IT.

PLEASE CALL ME ANYONE to get a CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT going against this person.

  7. Wow! I’m bleary-eyed from perusing all the stuff on your site…prompted by an attempt to determine whether Angel Stevens is legit. I thought not, and now know so. What, if anything, do you know about Team Double-Click which, according to the website: “Offers virtual staffing services to Real Estate professionals, Authors, Speakers, Coaches, Solo Entrepreneurs, Small Businesses, Non-Profits, Business Consultants, Medical Professionals, EBay and online retailers.”? I heard about them when the CEO appeared on ABC’S M&J Show, in a piece about working from home opportunities.

  8. Man, I feel like a fool

I fell for this stupid crap, I wish I had found this site before I paid 197 dollars for this fraud. I have talked to the people at visa and they said I have to cancel my card and then get a new one which is going to be a big hassel. The one that I bought was from Angel Stevens. I should have followed my feelings, dammit I am pissed. I have a legitimate business on the web and thought it would be nice to have something to do in my spare time. What an idiot. I have started a blog on blogger.com about this rip off. I hate to think what I would do to this bitch if I ever caught her on the street. sorry for the language, I don’t know who I’m more pissed at her or myself.

  9. Hi again from Joyce,
Goodness me, two posts in one day. Don’t these scammers keep us busy??? Just a “heads up”. Got an email today from someone who
supposedly helps others find online work from home.
She included a link with the email, and I clicked and was taken to a website for AhHa!! a Coupon Processing Business. Same type of story by one named Johanne Curren. Lots of work processing coupons for many companies, earning $20 per coupon that you process. Paid twice a month by a reputable online company. Filling out forms which take just minutes and you are paid $20 per form. The cost of this online coupon processing business is $39.95 and will jump at any minute to $67.00. Is there no end to this garbage? I checked the “source” and it was another website
which had everything under the sun for home workers. All
the same tired old stuff that does not work for anyone but the people selling it. Two pages of scams is about what it amounted to. Just wanted to put it out there in case someone new asks about it. Take Care,
    Joyce

  10. Hi again from Joyce,
Just wanted to note something from one of the recent posts.
Supposedly Penbrook Productions used Esellerate for payment processing. When I realized that I had been taken, I sent Esellerate an email with all my information, transaction #, etc.
and they wrote back that they do not handle any transactions for Penbrook Productions and that my information was not in any of their records. Then, I jumped over to the credit card company,
online and with written letters with all my info. Then it was taken care of. They worked we me and credited my account. I never found out if Esellerate was being truthful with me or not. So I say, beware of Esellerate, and go with your credit card company. They allow you to refute the credit and there is a reason for that. They know people get taken advantage of by others who are dishonest.
Thanks for everyone’s input, and hope all of you eventually get
    all your funds returned.
    Take Care,
    Joyce

  11. I contacted my bank this morning via email and fax and I already have the $197 credited to my account! SAME DAY!
I originally made this purchase on 4/2/08…
There is hope!! Just don’t count on help from Process At Home. They’ll give you a run around and everyone who works there can hardly speak English. I have contacted them 8 times since 4/23/08. The last time I talked to them, I asked to speak to a manager. When I gave him my cancellation confirmation # he said it was bogus, that I must have called a different company. What crap! This outfit is pure evil.

  12. I was scammed by these folks as well. The newest customer service phone number is 1-800-381-7820.(as of 5/22/08) I have continued to be told that my money would be refunded within 5-7 business days since 4/23/08. Make sure you get a refund confirmation # starting with 2 alpha followed by 8 numeric digits. I had been given (had to ask for it) a conf # back on 4/23/08 and was given a fake number. The reps hardly speak english and use that against you in order to give as little info as possible. I am still waiting for my refund and am now going to contact my credit card company.

  13. Last Thursday, May 22nd, I made the huge mistake of signing up for Angela’s program. Of course the money was taken out of my account in 5 nanoseconds. After receiving the materials and looking through the “instructions” I realized that I had been scammed. On Friday I started trying to get a refund. The phone numbers left me on hold forever saying I was caller number 20, 18, 15, etc. until I was finally the next caller to be helped when the line was disconnected. This happened twice. I found another number and called it and was told my refund would be processed in 5 – 7 business days and was given – you guessed it- the same confirmation number as everyone else. I emailed esellerate (the new company she is using for processing credit card charges) and was initially twice sent a canned response saying that the seller was responsible for the refund not them. I kept emailing process at home over and over again demanding an instant refund and told them my next stop would be the state attorneys office and then the feds. I called (not emailed) esellerate and told them the same thing. Once I did those two last things my refund was processed immediately. For all of you out there still waiting – don’t give up. Innundate “process at home” and esellerate until you get your money. I believe that esellerate is probably a good company, but let them know that they are taking money from people for Process at Home, and, in doing so, they are aiding and abetting a scammer. They will probably drop her like a rock and she will have to find someone else to front for her. Good Luck to all! PS I am still going to contact the feds!

  16. Hello Everyone,

Just got back from a trip to Colorado. Had a great time. But could not help thinking about what was going on here. I could not help but nearly roll out on the floor with hysterical laughter over what Joseph Ashford had to say on May 20. Is this person real??? (I think we have already determined that)

Joseph, now you are acting like a 2 year old having a temper tantrum. Man, just grow up, do your job, stop spreading your cancerous lies, and for Heavens sake, stop trying to scam people. How much more, obvious writing on the wall, do you need, to see what is as plain as the nose on your face.

Just look at the posts from just the last 7 days. Stella wrote that even her bank is already checking you out, Melissa wrote that your company is responsible for sending “Scam Mail”. Hey, I just realized, your company has created a new kind of mail. There is spam mail, and now, thanks to Angela Pebrook-Stevens we now have “scam mail”. Teri wrote that she finally gave up on your worthless lies and went to her bank. Refund followed 3 days later.

It just goes on and on. I have said it once Joseph and I will say it again. What do you want? Guns or roses!!! To be shot at or have roses thrown your way. If you would have just done the right thing, Jim would have sent you roses on May 22. Instead… you got shot at.

The sad thing is we know you can do it. Ric on the 24th proves you can do it every once in awhile.

Once again though the credit goes to Joe for setting this forum up. I have no doubt in my mind that if it had not been for this thread, the heat would not have been near hot enough.

And a grand tip of the hat to all of you who have taken the time to “voice” your experience here for the whole world to see. There is no way of knowing how many people you have actually saved from having their hard earned money stripped from them.

She is supposedly the “Director of Information at The International Data-Entry-At-Home Institute”. Funny thing is she is offering the same exact program for the same exact price!

That being said, I have NO DOUBT that this is nothing but a scam and thank God I wasn’t stupid enough to invest my money!

  18. I had never done anything like this before and I felt so stupid because I couldn’t get it going. I was under the impression that, “anyone could do this”, so I was determined to keep at it. It made me feel stupid that I couldn’t get it going. I have a college degree and I am a professional.
I began to suspect the legitimacy of this after all of the bad grammar and misspelling I found in the materials. When I e-mailed for support, the answers seemed automated and only vaguely applied to my concerns. The support numbers kept changing and I never was able to contact Angela “personally” as was offered. I once was reassured that support was available from 9-5 PST and then in another message they were available from 9-5 EST.

Below is a typical message I received from “support”.
    “Hi,
    Sorry for the inconvenience.

I filled out a fraud from, wrote a written statement, including website links such as this, included my e-mail to Penbrook productions requesting a refund and the return e-mail I got from Joseph A–hole. They had no problem returning my money after looking at the documentation.

  23. Hello everyone, and add another boxcar full of thanks from my girfriend and I, to that thank-you train heading your way Joe. GREATSITE!!! We also were about to be hooked too! We were looking for something to pull a little extra cash in so the both of us and my girlfriend’s 7 year old son can have a little more breathing room in the billing department (due to me being laid off from work). We just found out that the doctor’s have diagnosed him with autism and money is tight. We’re doing ok, but thanks to this site and all of the postings about how everyone was being scammed BIG TIME, we know we won’t have to have more money taken from us that shouldn’t be taken in the first place due to a scam. KUDOES to Carl, Teri, and Stella (with her colorful choice of words at the end, LOL) for putting those S.O.B.’s ON THE RUN!!! They can’t run forever though, THEY WILL BE CAUGHT!! They will have to remember though that it won’t end when they pass away either, God WILL remember and WILL judge them even more harshly than any law officials or prison system could ever do. We are deeply sorry for everyone who had to (or is going through) this situation. Have Faith and we’ll be keeping all of you in our prayers for a speedy resolution to this!! GOD BLESS YOU AGAIN JOE!!!!

  27. You are absolutely right, Carl. What am I doing on this forum? I am trying to help out many many different people, and not being too successful. So Instead, I wont. I’ll just do as my job requires of me. I don’t need to be here. I don’t need to hear people putting me through crap because I promised to help out an old friend. So, do me a favor Carl, figure out what to do now. Angela Penbrook, and associates of Penbrook Productions will no longer post here. They will not attempt to reach people, and well I’ll be in my cushy office, just sending out reports in hopes that stuff gets done. I will no longer be answering my phone, I’ll just check messages, and probably delete them, unless they are people who are not requesting a refund. As a manager, I have employees below me to see to this sort of thing. So Good bye. Sorry Joe, I did what I could. It wasn’t enough. I have a lot more responsibilities to fulfill than read research, refund and respond to people who only want to spit on me while I am helping them.

  28. Teri,

You are asking a lot of very good questions and making some really good observations. Great job of seeing through all of the smoke and mirrors put up by this Penbrook pageantry. And also seeing through the electronic internet camo this “Joseph Ashford” character is hiding behind. GREAT JOB! I just love it when the truth shines out.

He even told me I was getting a refund even though I have never given them a dime. You can read about in on the post I made on April 9th. Even went so far as to give me a confirmation number. It just proves the confirmation number is a huge hairy lie. I always thought a confirmation number was to confirm the validity of an action. But it is nothing more than another scam procedure designed to deceive the customer.

Need even more proof? It seems they only have one confirmation number to give out. Read how many people on this forum have all received the same number. But what do you expect when the trained customer service employee is reading a script from a piece of paper that only has one number to read off. You cant expect these people to think. They are only paid to read.

I have said it several times on this forum and I will say it one more time. I think the whole “Joseph Ashford” character is just another facade, just like Angela Penbrook. They do not exist as real individuals. I think “Joseph Ashford’s” stories are phony baloney. It is nothing more than an elaborate cat and mouse game. And it even includes a cheesy ebook that is completely dried out and useless for anything more than filling yesterday’s trash pick up.

However, I do think the real individual behind “Joseph Ashford” has more to do with this dog and pony show than he is letting on. The only way all of your questions and observations, as well as the the many others that have been brought up previously can or will make any sense is this…and you can weigh this against everything that has been written about this bogus little offer on this forum:

Angela Penbrook and Joseph Ashford are only fronts of the same person. Some would call these pseudonyms or pen names. Others just refer to them as code names to track or monitor traffic flow.

And that person is the one who is afraid to come clean with their real name. That person is the one who is “in charge” of refunds. And that person is the one who is starting to feel the pressure of all the bad publicity coming down around them. And now they are even beginning to “negotiate” refunds. WHAT? Since when does a 100% satisfaction guarantee translate into “let’s make a deal” for half the money?

PLEEEEEZZZZE. Come on “Joseph Ashford” or whatever your name is! I know you are watching and reading this. You have already proven that. When are you going to stop with the shifty eyed, bait and switch, circus side show tactics?

And you have the nerve to accuse me on May 6th of this forum of “belittling the competition” by what I have written about your offer? It is disturbingly amusing that you could possibly think you could even remotely be considered competition. You are pathetic in mildest terms. And you do nothing but complete disservice to the entire “work from home” industry.

You remind me of a snake oil sales man who could care less about what is in the bottle, as long as you can convince someone to give you a buck for it long enough for you to sneak out the back way like a snake in the grass, and race your little covered wagon onto the next town before someone catches on to your perpetual scam.

But I have to hand it to you. What I wrote about the perceived value of your offer on May 17th must have made an impression. Afterall you are at least offering a 50% discount if your customer will agree to keep it instead of asking for a full refund as Teri pointed out on May 19th. You just need to remember to change the wording on your guarantee from “100% full” to “50% negotiated”.

Once again folks. Do not walk…RUN to your bank or credit card provider and dispute the charge as soon as possible. Do not wait for “Joseph Ashford”, “Angela Penbrook” or anyone else about this. You only have a limited amount of time before your refund window closes. Do not allow them keep “buying time” until you are out of time to sell. The sooner you dispute the charge, the more time you will have to see it through.

All you have to do is read some of the posts on this forum to see the facts about this offer.

Right “Joseph Ashford”? But who am I to be talking about refunds. You are the expert.

  31. Joseph Ashford is Full of BS.

I wrote to him here on the forum on the 14th regarding the fact that although I was sent a confirmation that I would be receiving a credit on my refund, I had never been notified that that was not actually the case because they had “fired” the processing company. ( I learned that here on I’ve tried that, wouldn’t have known otherwise )

His reply was that I would be getting a check around the same time I should have received my credit card refund.
He stated that his time was better spent processing checks for others as opposed to contacting the people who are still waiting for their credits.

He does seem to have enough time to get on this forum and try to make everyone think he is sincere about refunds but I believe that is his best effort to stall anyone into waiting for something that isn’t coming. Buying time?

First of all, Mr. Ashford didn’t even know who he was responding to here, so how can he tell me that he just learned yesterday that my refund was affected and is sending a check….

Second, I did not receive a check as he stated, around the same time I should have received my credit refund; I have recieved nothing at all, including an e-mail or letter from Penbrook Productions to inform me of the problem they have now encountered. If you look at his reply to me he stated everyone would be informed.

Finally, if getting all of these refunds processed is such a time consuming position why in Sam Hills name is Joseph Ashford handling this project all by himself!!

Folks, DON’T WAIT FOR A CHECK THAT ISN’T GOING TO COME!
DISPUTE THE CHARGE WITH YOUR CREDIT CARD COMPANY.
CHANCES ARE IF YOU DID RECEIVE A CHECK IT WOULD NOT BE HONORED AT THE BANK. LET’S BE REAL CLEAR ON THIS.
A SCAM IS A SCAM IS A SCAM FROM TOP TO BOTTOM.

It’s interesting that by our good human nature we are still inclined to believe what this person is feeding us even after he has scammed us once.

Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me.
    CALL YOUR BANK FOLKS.

  32. Joseph Ashford,

Yes it can be very much be debated. And more than likely with great success. You might as well be called Joe Schmuck for that matter. We don’t care, just as long as you keep making progress and staying on top of customer concerns. Which by the way, you seem to be monitoring this forum rather closely as I mentioned on May 14.

But of coarse, I have a much bigger question for you to consider. While I commend you for your seeming efforts to help fix this, have you stopped to ask yourself why so many people are even asking for refunds in the first place? In truth, marketing 101 teaches that refund request ratios is a measuring standard to gauge how valuable the offer is in the mind of the customer compared to the price they paid.

In other words, if your offer is perceived as under priced, you have low refund requests. And conversely, if your offer sucks and is perceived as overpriced, YOU ARE GOING TO HAVE A LOT OF REFUND REQUESTS.

But I don’t have to tell you that. And I guess you already know which side of that fence your offer is on. OK so we already know that. But I am curious to find out if you actually thought you would get away with it.

I have to admit, you had great copywriters for your sales page. Maybe I need to find out if they do freelance work. Just think how much money you could have made with your conversions but with a real legitimate offer. There are all kinds of confusing questions I can come up with about your site. And most of them start with Why? Just seems like a lot of trouble and expense. Not to mention the black eye. Like I said…Why? I guess in the end when the dust settles, you are still laughing all the way to the bank.

And then what? Rinse…and Repeat? Angela Jones maybe?

  33. So I did it too. Geeze. I really wish I would have done the research first on this Angela chick. I called customer service. The first time I called the rep pretended he couldn’t hear me (thats my opinion anyways) so I called back from a diffrent phone.. SAME GUY??!! I couldnt believe it. I said I wanted a refund and he took some information and put me on hold. A few moments later he came back offering me a 50% discount/refund to continue on with the information. I declined and told him to give me a full refund. We’ll see.

I assume you’re trying to get a hold of me. I think I pulled up your information, and I noticed that your refund was indeed processed on the 15th of March. Unfortunately it was not a successful settle. I just submitted your name on a list for people to receive checks. I tried calling you twice this morning to inform you of this, but after ringing the phone went into a busy tone. I hope this helps. Thank you for your patience.
By the Way, my name is Joseph Ashford, not Armstrong. Well even that can be dabated. . . .right Carl? Have a great day.

  35. Please give me the contact info for this Joseph Armstrong. I have been calling since Feb 2008 to get my refund and the almost non- english speaking customer service reps keep giving me bogis transaction numbers and telling me it was processed on 3/15/08. If it’s been processed then where is it? Bottom line – How do I get my money back?

  36. Teri, Not everybody is effected by our negligent processors. Unfortunately you were. I found out yesterday that you were not going to be receiving your refund conventionally, but I was so busy with trying to ensure that people who didn’t get refunds are getting checks. I apologize for not contacting you to inform you but I had 2 options, tell yo, and lose about 15 minutes that I could use to process 5 more people’s refunds via check. I had to choose the 5 people. And now, everybody who is getting a check is getting informed. Oh and another thing, you should be receiving the check at about the same time as you would be receiving a credit card refund. Yet another reason why I was more concerned with getting more people refunded. So I apologize for not informing you yesterday. I only hope you understand why. Thank you for your time.

  37. Mr. Joseph Ashford,

On May 13, you sent me an e-mail stating that the refund on my card would be processed within 5-7 days. Although that time frame has not expired, and I have not yet receied my refund; I am extremely concerned that perhaps you are not as forthcoming as I thought.

Only 1 day after you said my refund would be processed, You are now claiming here in the forum that your “processor” has failed to do their job and is therefore is not handling refunds.

That being the case , I can’t grasp the fact that I have yet to receive another e-mail, letter, or phone call to notify me of the situation and to inform me that the refund may not be going through after all and that your “company” is issuing checks.

I would now advise everyone to file the fraud form with their bank, for saftey’s sake, because it just seems like one thing after another!

In addition, I wonder what the attorneys’ behind these large corporations that Penbrook Productions falsely advertises would have to say about how your misrepresenting them.

I suppose with a little research and some contact info and a couple of forwards we might find out!

  38. Mr. Ashford. I’m happy to see that several people on this site have been kind enough to respond to my fear that I have once again been fed a bunch of bogus information. If you honestly did put through a check refund to me today as you stated when I spoke to you this morning, then I thank you very much and I will be expecting to receive the refund within a few days. I hope that you will continue to assist others that like me feel they have been taken advantage of in the worst possible way by the Pembrook organization. Again, I appeciate your assistance on my behalf.

  39. I agree Joe…completely. And I also agree that Alexa should take the check and run. That is a great gesture for them to make to try and resolve an issue. And to give credit where credit is due. I have also gotten several emails from people who have said that “Joseph Ashford” has gotten refunds to them. All indications are that effort is being made to clean the reputation up. Let’s hope that it continues.

Alexa, I would allow them to follow through with the check and see what happens. On the positive side, effort was made to at least come back to this forum and respond to your comments. That means they are aware of being very carefully watched and seem to have an interest in doing the right thing. And Joseph Ashford is at least making progress in the clean up. Keep it up Joseph. By the way, I hope you got the email I sent to you the other day.

  40. Regarding the Angela Penbrook aka. Angel Stevens: Although many may think the BBB doesn’t “do” anything, they DO inform you before you buy. In addition, just like many have added in this forum, check it out. If it’s too good to be true, then it probably isn’t. My first instinct was “Wow” that would be cool. Yet, the fact that such big companies would actually entrust unkowns on the internet to process their rebates, well, just doesn’t make sense. So, I “googled” and got to this site. THANK YOU! Far too many of us are trying just to put gas in the tanks these days. The truth of life is that you “get what you give”. There are no true “no work” success stories… they all involve work. “He who works his land will have abundant food, but the one who chases fantasies will have his share of poverty. A faithful man will be ricly blessed, but one eager to get rich will not go unpunished.” (Proverbs 28:19,20) Guess scammers came with the apple eating! Too bad it’s the honest man who pays the price!

  41. Alexa, I actually take that “check story” as a good sign. I have never dealt with a merchant who said, in effect, “We can’t get to your credit card info, but we’ll send you a check.” That seems like an extraordinary effort to do the right thing, and I think you have every reason to expect to get the check as you were promised.

As for Joseph Ashford, he’s never given me a reason to disbelieve what he’s saying. Several people have already gotten refunds after contacting him.

Carl, this thread is only one of many all over the Net that complains about various aspects of the Penbrook business model. It’s not that we’re geniuses, it’s just that poor business practices will lead to trouble every time.

  42. Look Alexa, there is no way you can tell right now if I am lying or telling the truth, only the future will be able to dictate that. Normally I would be deeply offended by somebody calling me a liar. But I understand that you’ve been waiting for a very long time for your refund and it’s been a journey of lies. So I am here, in front of this forum to tell you that what I told you is not a story. I told you that our processor has failed to do their job, for that, they are being released. And because we are not using them anymore, they are retaliating by not allowing refunds. This problem will be fixed, possibly due to legal actions. But in the mean time I have been given permission to process refunds via check. If you would prefer I will remove you from my list of people who will be receiving a check and we can wait merrily for the processor to process refunds again. The choice is yours. I apologize for assuming you desired your refund in the most expeditious way possible.

  43. Hello Everyone,

As many of you know, I have been very outspoken about the antics of this enterprise who offer a “work at home” program written by someone called Angela Penbrook, as have many others on this thread. I believe the collective effort of everyone here has had a tremendous negative effect on the traffic and conversion rates(# of sales to visits)of their offer. We all owe a train load of thanks to Joe, the creator of this website and thread.

Personally, as I have stated before, I do not believe that this Angela Penrook even exists. I think it is a made up front to appeal to a certain market demographic. Particularly, but not exclusively to, the stay at home and single moms in the world.

The character is nothing more than a fictitious identity figure. Someone that can give the impression of “relating” to the target market(again the stay at home and single moms). And conversely, someone they can relate to. This is all designed to create a “perceived” emotional connection or bond with the intended audience. Folks this is nothing more than psychological marketing tactics 101. It is designed to get your money.

But with all the heat that is being generated from the posts on this thread, they have decided to start doing some damage control work. Enter someone called Joseph Ashford. If you have read some of the previous posts you will see that “Joseph Ashford” and I have exchanged a few “posts”.

Personally, I am not convinced that even Joseph Ashford is a real person. I think it is a code name used just for the people who are on this thread. When you call in and ask for Joseph Ashford, they know by that code name, you must have been reading this thread otherwise how would you know to ask for that name. By that they seem to be more willing to cooperate in refunds. This is part of the damage control strategy. Again, it is very sly, sneaky, deceitful marketing tricks. This is how they track where all the traffic, (good and bad) is coming from.

I think the Joseph Ashford name was a “tracking code” planted onto this thread just so they could track how many people were actually reading this thread and how much damage it was doing to their business. That is a sign that this thread is having a huge impact on their business and making a big impression. WE HAVE THEIR ATTENTION! If not, they would not even bother. We have to keep the heat on.

Personally, I think it is rather interesting that according to Teri above on May 13, “Joseph Ashford would go to the trouble of setting up a private email account with Yahoo to respond to her refund with. I think that is another way of tracking refund requests.

If you look at the traffic rankings for penbrookproductions dot com and rebateprocessortools dot com, the first site traffic is almost non existant. The second site, the traffic is falling fast. So fast it has all but just about stopped as well.

Also, I think that this person who is posting the name of Joseph Ashford is more than just an “employee”. I think he or she, may actually be someone more involved with this scam offer than they are admitting. But you can bet their real name is NOT being used in any way shape or form.

So keep putting the heat on them. Do not let them up to breath. Keep sending them email, and dialing the phones. But in any case do not wait to contact your bank. As soon as you see this thread, start making efforts to get your money back. Write to all of the email addresses. Dial all of the phone numbers, AND get in touch with your bank. Make sure they know you are not going to let them get away with this. And don’t give up.

Once again, thank Joe for setting this thread up. He has helped a lot of people from being taken by a crook and many others who were, to get their money back.

  44. My experiences with Joseph Ashford have NOT been helpful. I emailed him twice and kept calling the numbers listed from everyone who has responded to this site for 5 days. I just got off of the phone with Mr. Ashford who claims he never received my two emails. Then he tells me that they tried to refund my money to my credit card however they were unsuccessful due to the company that is processing their refunds. He claims they have had problems with the company and they are still trying to work kinks out of the system. Does this sound like a true reply to any of you? Furthermore he told me they would be sending out a check to me being that they are unable to get my refund to go through. I told him they need to overnight me the check as I have been trying to get my refund for over 22 days. I am calling my bank back. I do not trust or believe this Joseph Ashford is telling the truth. Just like everyone else who works for Angela Pembrook. Has anyone else been told this we have to send you a check story?

  45. Yes, I was a victim of this ridiculous scam, too! Just wanted to say Thanks to “I’ve tried that” for being there for us unfortunate victims and connecting us to find a solution the refund situation.

    I e-mailed ccm@penbrookproductions to request a refund. I received a reply within 24 hours stating that I would be receiving a refund.

I did not get any bogus confirmation numbers, the ID numbers on the e-mail are different, and the last 4 digits of my Credit Card number are on the confirmation. ( I did not provide that info in my request). I only gave him my name, address and the date the transaction posted to my account.

This e-mail from Joseph Ashford appears to be legit, and it looks like he has responded to some with refunds already.

The only odd thing was that his reply to me did not come from ccm@penbrookproductions, but from ashford.joseph@yahoo.com.

I will be sure to send an update once the refund goes through to let you know if it’s working!
